Hi All!

Two weeks ago I got an original N560 and from this day on I have done many experiments with the PDA. And now I am stuck with a lot of questions...

What did I do?
1. First I implemented the latest WM6.1 ROM by Newplow. No problem.
2. Then I flashed the Sirf firmware 3.5.0 as described here. Worked (firmware version verified with sirftech).
3. Then I used TuneUp to load the latest ephemeris according to SIF2, for 3.5.0 and did all the neccesary things.
4. Then I got my very first fix... with 10 or 11 satellites.
5. TuneUp says that the NVM5 file is in use...

So far, so good. Everybody is very enthousiastic about this config, and people come up with stunning results ("5 seconds fix", etc.)

But... nobody mentions the start-up condition reference! Are these exhilarating results from a N560 that is switched off or suspended? In my case I get stunning results when I resume the device from the suspend status. But if I switch the PDA on (an it boots up), then it takes ages to get my first fix. Ages! But I think that this is not OK! Ephemeris files are stored in a non-volatile memory and -hence- can be reloaded after switching the device on. So almanac data can be reloaded immediately and the first fix should be reached after a few seconds. Am I right?

Now my questions...

QUESTION 1: from which start-up condition are your fine results? Resume or switch on?
QUESTION 2: should my PDA get a fix within a few seconds, even if the device was switched off (by pressing the power switch a few seconds)?
QUESTION 3: how can I check (prove!) if the ephemeris file NVM5 is actually used (apart from what TuneUp says)?
QUESTION 4: How can I check/prove if InstantFix ii is actually working?
QUESTION 5: What is InstantFix ii anyway? Is it a piece of software that you can download somewhere? Or is it embedded in the firmware? Or is it burnt into hardware revisions of the SirfStar iii chip? Really, after having googled for many days, I did not find the answer on this question! Has InstantFix ii a weight? Can you touch it? Eat it? InstantFix ii is to me a complete black hole, even after days of googling around.
QUESTION 6: I found a piece of software "InstantFix II.cab". What is it? Do you have to install this to make InstantFix ii work, or is it voluntary?

Thank you all for your help and pardon me for being precise...

Cheers,

Axel from Holland

1, 2. The GPS chip _must_ have correct time syncronized to GPS satellites to be able to load correct ephemeris. This syncronization is lost if PDA is powered down (GPS chip is down also; no battery power). A "5 second" start just _after_ time syncd (see it with SirfTech).

3, 4. At the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Intermec\GPS\Internal\SiRF3 add key Diagnostic of DWORD type and set its value to 1. Now it logs technical info to \sirf_debug.txt. Read the log (log is inacessible during GPS active).

5. InstantFix consists of two parts: GPS chip firmware and software for PDA (driver).
Firmware gives ability to pass ephemeris to and to get it from GPS chip (some NMEA and SiRF commands). File: flashed to GPS chip.
Driver clearly performing operations on storing ephemeris (storage is \NVM3 file) got form GPS sats and loading it back from storage (with update from *.ee file) to GPS chip on user demand. It stores data all time GPS is on and sends data to GPS chip on GPS activation. Files: SiRF3GPS.dll, SiRF3EE.dll with support in GPSID.dll.

6. This is it. Newplow already inserted this packet to firmware. You should not install this.
